Black Officer Involved In George Floyd Killing Is Nigerian
Black Officer Involved In George Floyd Killing Is Nigerian
Two of Mr Kueng’s siblings, Taylor and Radiance, both of whom are African-American, called for the arrests of all four officers, including their brother. They joined protests in Minneapolis.
One of the black police officers at the scene of the killing of George Floyd by a white officer in Minneapolis in May has a Nigerian father, the New York Times reports
Alex Kueng joined the police largely because he believed diversity could force change in a Police Department long accused of racism.
Mr Kueng, who faces charges of aiding and abetting in Mr Floyd’s death, is out on bail, hounded at the supermarket by strangers and denounced by some family members.
Long before Mr Kueng was arrested, he had wrestled with the issue of police abuse of black people, joining the force in part to help protect people close to him from police aggression. He argued that diversity could force change in a Police Department long accused of racism.
New York Times reported that he had seen one sibling arrested and treated poorly, in his view, by sheriff’s deputies. He had found himself defending his decision to join the police force, saying he thought it was the best way to fix a broken system.
He had clashed with friends over whether public demonstrations could make things better.
“He said, ‘Don’t you think that that needs to be done from the inside?’” his mother, Joni Kueng, recalled him saying after he watched protesters block a highway years ago. “That’s part of the reason why he wanted to become a police officer — and a black police officer on top of it — is to bridge that gap in the community, change the narrative between the officers and the black community.”
As hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated against the police after Mr Floyd’s killing on May 25, Mr Kueng became part of a national debate over police violence toward black people, a symbol of the very sort of policing he had long said he wanted to stop.
Derek Chauvin, the officer who placed his knee on Mr Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, has been most widely associated with the case. He faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter; Mr Kueng and two other former officers were charged with aiding and abetting the killing.
At 26, Mr Kueng was the youngest and least experienced officer at the scene, on only his third shift as a full officer. The arrest of Mr Kueng, whose mother is white and whose father was from Nigeria, has brought anguish to his friends and family.
“It’s a gut punch,” Ms Kueng said. “Here you are, you’ve raised this child, you know who he is inside and out. We’re such a racially diverse family. To be wrapped up in a racially motivated incident like this is just unfathomable.”
Two of Mr Kueng’s siblings, Taylor and Radiance, both of whom are African-American, called for the arrests of all four officers, including their brother. They joined protests in Minneapolis.
Burna Boy wins 2020 BET Best International Act award.
Burna Boy wins 2020 BET Best International Act award.
Burna Boy has just won the BET Award for Best International Act. The Nigerian superstar edged out other nominees including Innoss’B (DR Congo), Sho Madjozi (South Africa), Stormzy (United Kingdom), Dave (United Kingdom), Ninho (France) and S.Pri Noir (France) to claim the highly coveted award.
Accepting his award, the African Giant thanked BET and used the opportunity to shine some light on Africa. “Thank you very much, BET,” he said. “Second time and I appreciate it. I will like to use this opportunity to say that sometime around 1835, there was admission to turn the nation of Africa into a dominated nation. Now is the time to return and go back to the royalty that we were because in order for black lives to matter, Africa must matter.”
His acceptance speech has been getting lots of positive reviews on social media.” I hope people think retrospectively and see the TRUTH in that statement and live by it,” one user wrote. “Burna Boy’s speech resonates with me. Naija STAND UP! From the Motherland to the Diaspora,” yet another Twitter user wrote.
This win is the Port Harcourt-born singer’s second consecutive BET: Best International Act win. Last year he was nominated alongside Mr Eazi, AKA, Dave, Giggs, Dosseh and Aya Nakaruma.

Nigerian writer reveals why he returned about $2500 he picked on the ground
A Nigerian writer named Alex Adekunle James in a post on social media has revealed why he returned a sum of over $2500 he picked on the ground.
Adekunle disclosed he never for once thought of keeping the money as what he was concerned about was how to locate the owner, which he eventually did.
He further stated that it was necessary to live an exemplary life as a Nigerian to educate others on the right thing to do in such situations.
See what he wrote on Instagram;
” A couple of weeks ago (3rd of June), at about 8pm, I was walking my family members, who had come visiting, to their car when I saw this wallet on the floor. As I picked it up, I was stunned by the bulky multiples of $200 bills, a couple of tens of dirham, naira notes, a Dubia medical Insurance card, debit cards (both Naira & Dollar), complementary card, among others. •
•
At that point, I was just consumed with finding out who owned it. A few minutes later, I discovered the wallet belonged to a member of the Federal House of Representative. Thoughts kept flashing through my head, especially because I needed money. I still set out to return it. 😭😭
•
•
After so many efforts, I eventually, very late that night, handed over the wallet to him in person. He didn’t say a word to me, as he was on a call the whole time. I barely got a thank you, talk more of a tip, but guess what? •
•
I still felt so much joy doing the right thing.
I saw it as an avenue to make God proud.
I saw it as an opportunity to exemplify the values my generation needs to fix Nigeria.
I saw it as the litmus test to what I have dedicated my life to in the last 11 years (mobilizing Nigerian youths to transform Nigeria into a first-world nation). I saw it as a test to validate the book I have been working on for a couple of months now (Titled “You are the Nigerian Dream” which, by the way, will be out very soon). •
•
About 3 days after the incident, the Honorable in question came looking for me in my house, apologized and explained that he was on a very important call and we had a chat for a while. He asked me to text my account details and later that day, I received a token of appreciation from him.
•
•
In our hands, Nigeria must be better! We need to exemplify the right values to pull Africa out of its rut.”

Daddy Freeze Defends Hushpuppi (READ)
Don’t judge Hushpuppi, Daddy Freeze cautions Nigerians
Broadcaster, Ifedayo Olarinde aka Daddy Freeze, has said he always assumed that alleged international fraudster, Ramon Abass aka Hushpuppi, was a social media influencer and not a criminal.
Daddy Freeze, who is known for his incessant attacks on pastors, said Jesus Christ never condemned anyone and it would be wrong of anyone to judge Hushpuppi.
Daddy Freeze, who works with 99.3FM Nigeria Info, said this in a video while reacting to criticisms from Nigerians on Friday.
In an old documentary that began trending in the wake of Hushpuppi’s recent arrest, Daddy Freeze is seen mocking Nigerian youths who accuse Hushpuppi of fraud.
In the documentary which is almost an hour-long, Daddy Freeze, accompanied by his wife, described with glowing words Hushpuppi’s questionable lifestyle.
Hushpuppi’s driver earns N700,000 month while you that abuses him on social media are doing houseboy work and earn N35,000 a month…Instead of you to beg Hushpuppi to hire your father as a driver,” Daddy Freeze had said.
Addressing the criticisms fired at him, the broadcaster said Hushpuppi told him he was a social media influencer.
He said had he known that Hushpuppi was a criminal, he wouldn’t have hung out with him.
Narrating, Daddy Freeze said, “While we were driving, he got calls from Gucci, he got calls from Versace, and he got calls from LV all wanting to host him. He said he was an influencer. While I was there, there was nothing suspicious.
“He didn’t receive calls from hackers. I didn’t meet him at a crime scene. I met him at the Burberry VIP Lounge that was open to exclusive members and his house. The interview was shot in those places.
“Another set of guys say oh Daddy Freeze you’re hanging out with criminals. First things first, I didn’t know him to be a criminal. If I did, I wouldn’t hang out with him and unless someone is proven guilty, I do not discriminate against him because Christ who I follow didn’t discriminate.”

United Nations denies singer, D’banj as their ambassador
Contrary to the belief that music entertainer, Oladapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj is the United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace, The Director of Information, United Nations Information Centre for Nigeria, Joseph Kayanja has denied the father of one as a member of the United Nations.
According to Mr Joseph Kayanja during an email chat with The PUNCH on Wednesday, D’Banj was never at any time given the title of ambassador by the UN. The email read in part, “I would like to confirm that the said Mr. Oladapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj is NOT a UN Ambassador. The title was accorded to him by an obscure UN youth association which has nothing to do with the United Nations. I hope this clarifies.”
Recall that In 2012, D’Banj’s publicists announced that the musician was the first Nigerian to be appointed a UN Youth Ambassador for Peace. Following the rape allegations levelled against D’Banj by Seyitan Babatayo, an online petition was started calling on the UN to strip the musician of the title. The petition on Change.org has been signed by over 22,000 people as of June 24, 2020.
